Solar-Powered Electric Cycle Rickshaw - Soleckshaw

Name:
Anna da Costa
Name of Organization, Community or Implementer:
Centre for Scientific and Industrial Research
City (if relevant):
Delhi
Summary:

A cycle rickshaw with an electric assist, charged at solar-powered charging stations, which it is hoped will both reduce the physical burden on its driver (still called a 'puller', after the old rickshaw simply pulled by a man) as well as the environmental burden of burning more fossil fuels if cycle rickshaws were eliminated altogether.

Description:

The Soleckshaw seats three people and can go at a maximum speed of 12.5 mph. It has an electric light, FM radio and mobile phone charger. The rickshaw’s 36-volt battery need is charged every six of seven hours (or about 45 miles of riding) from solar powered charging stations.

Finance - Did this climate solution require funding?:

At a price of Rs22,000 (compared to Rs8,500) for a non-electric cycle rickshaw micro loans are likely to be needed for drivers to be able to afford them.

The Soleckshaw's developer, the Centre for Scientific and Industrial Research, has indicated that a loan program will be put in place that will allow drivers to pay back the purchase price at a rate similar to that which they already are likely paying to rent their current rickshaw.

electric assist yes / solar powered?

Before our city council banned electric assist pedicabs in New York City (due to a technical difference between state and federal laws in many parts of our country that affect how a bicycle is defined by law), several people operated them and really enjoyed them. There are two ways to power the electric assist bike: with a hub motor on the front wheel, or by driving the back axle or chainrings with a motor and drivetrain. The European design requires the operator to pedal before the motor will engage. This is true pedal-electric design. The technology is getting better and better for electric assist. Battery design, incorporating lithium-ion cells, are becoming lighter and lighter. Other designers are looking at regenerative breaking (collecting energy lost during breaking and re-using it). See: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/12/15/science/earth/15bike.html?_r=1 There are trade offs: carrying the battery weight often feels like carrying a person around. So number 1, the pedicab design should be lightweight and very strong to support the passenger load and the battery load. Typically, the electric assist pedicab requires a 24 or even 36 volt system (as much as three 25-30 pound rechargable batteries!). But carrying a solar collector around on top of a pedicab may actually slow the pedicab down rather than help it. Perhaps the solution is a network of charging stations around the city and an arrangement where battery packs may be exchanged during a day's riding. To be sure, pedicab drivers when working do not have time to wait for a battery to charge when they are busy. What will yo do if it rains during the Commonwealth Games? So imagine, like a pit stop, pedicab drivers pull in for a battery change and a cup of tea? You are onto something for sure with the electric assist pedicab. If interested, we can provide technical and organizational assistance as you develop this idea. Happy 2010! -pm

Good Use of Solar Power

Great use of solar power to help curb carbon emissions! I think this could be a huge help to many developing countries too, although it would take some work to install solar power chargers, but they could try using ones like this http://www.solarpowerchargers.org/solar-charger-reviews/, which are cheaper and could be used in developed nations too. I believe that in the future all major city centers will have various "city only" vehicles like the electric cycle above.

I personally have embraced

I personally have embraced the new technologies and the CMS platforms, I think the new tools only make the web designs better. I am glad that new technologies are coming out in web design that make things easier, improved, and better looking for design. thanks.

promotional price

what is buck price of this rickshaw please sent

Amazing !

Good One, It is good as we can use solar race and use as eletricity and more new things.and another thing is that it is free of cost as it is nature gift to us.

This is really great and

This is really great and thats what I am talking about. We need more and more solutions like this to power the world in coming centuries to make it a better place.

SOLAR ELECTRIC RICKSHAW

Dear friend, I am interested to inform more details as I am the sole developer of several solar powered and electric vehicles developed since 1993 and sucessfully running on the road with lowest conversion cost and efforts as well as also easy to run and maintenance by any layman. you can view all my vehicles on yOU TUBE running on the roads of our city.do visit my web link too.
